Great Quote III

“There's no such thing as life without bloodshed. I think the notion that the species can be improved in some way, that everyone could live in harmony, is a really dangerous idea. Those who are afflicted with this notion are the first ones to give up their souls, their freedom. Your desire that it be that way will enslave you and make your life vacuous.”

-Cormac McCarthy, New York Times interview, 1992

Very nietzschean, but in a good way.

I like McCarthy, although we obviously would have theological disagreements. He, at the least, understands the dark and inescapable consequences of the degradation in society. In the boo No Country for Old Men, he really shows this. In a great line (which is, of course, not in the film) the old sheriff tells a woman who is concerned that her daughetr's abortion rights will be taken away,

"Ma'am, don't worry. The way this country is going, your daughter will be able to have her abortion and put you to sleep as well."

He was right!

BTW, you must read Blood Meridian and/or Suttree by this author!

Hi, Rob,

about an hour ago, at 2 AM in the morning, a stone flew straight through my bedroom window, right in front of me, while I was watching "The Kite Runner" on my computer. And it was a quiet night.
